{"text":"Good afternoon, Drivers!\nI currently use Hammer and am wondering about the pros and cons like…which app is better and more reliable. I have run into some issues that i have been able to work around bit have also been in the middle of a metro area with construction going on and Hammer kinda left me hanging. Just looking to see if anyone has experience with both truck GPS apps and say one is better then the other. In the middle of the road/traffic is the worse time for your GPS to flip out. \nThank you all! ","videos":"[]","link":"{}","pics":"[]","canComment":true,"externalShare":false}

{"replyTo":"","text":"ig·no·rance /ˈiɡnərəns/ noun\nlack of knowledge or information\n\nOP asked about an app, not an atlas.\n\nThe atlas gets an update once a year. I'm 56 years old and have been using computers my entire adult life. They are a lot more reliable than they used to be for sure. I've been driving a truck since 2005, and have safely and successfully used a GPS of some sort almost the entire time. People who drive into a river because the GPS told them to were apt to drive into a river without a GPS, it was just an excuse.\n\nYes, you should know your route. You should check your route in the atlas to make sure it's a truck route. Everyone has to read the road signs. In addition to that, there is nothing wrong with a GPS app or device, if used properly it's a great tool to have.\n\nI didn't want a GPS at first. A friend bought one for me. I hooked it up and I noticed I could see the upcoming street names two or three blocks away. At night I would be right on top of it before I could read the street sign. Totally worth it, just for that. What if someone had damaged or stolen the sign? I was real nervous driving a truck at first, because if I passed up the street, where would I turn this big rig around?\n\nThe atlas will not show you every street in every city. It won't show you a satellite image of the place you're going to. It won't show you pictures from the street so you can pinpoint exactly where the truck entrance is (which can then be entered into a truck gps). It won't tell you about road closures due to accidents or construction. It will not tell you what the traffic will be like in any city at any time. \n\nA smart phone will tell you all these things. When people don't  use this readily available information, it is willfully ignorant. To encourage people not to use every tool available is unethical.\n\nYou need an atlas and road signs, but that's not all. If there's construction or street closures on your route, you'll need a heads up. If you are going outside a major metropolitan area, not covered by the atlas, you'll need specific directions. Here's the thing, why would I trust someone's directions when I can see it myself? Some people dont trust electronics, I don't trust people.\n\nA person who crashes or goes down the wrong road, and blames the GPS was probably going to crash or go down the wrong road anyway.","replyToPid":0}

{"replyTo":"","text":"I like Hammer because it's free and has offline maps, good to have as a backup at least. I don't like how it zooms.\n\nSmarttruckroute 2, I'm pretty sure uses google data. It zooms like google maps, hate that, all the map features are too small, like google, zoom in, the icons shrink back still cant read 'em, get a 10\" tablet, you see more map, still too small to read. The interface is real easy once you figure it out, easy to find truckstops, tap-navigate-boom. It will reroute you unexpectedly like google, and hard to get your original route back. You can look at all your upcoming turns, and it will tell you which lane(s) you'll need. No offline maps, you'll need data.\n\nI pay for truckerpath for the parking predictions, but wouldn't bother with the navigation because it will do the same annoying google things smarttruckroute does.\n\nSygic looks the best, the map is so slick, I wish i could use it, but the interface is so unwieldy, its really bad trying to put an address in and everything else, at least compared to the others. I really really want to use it, but can't. It has offline maps.\n\nI use Copilot, made by Trimble, who also makes PC miler, they've been around since '78 . It seems to be the most reliable with the best routing. It has offline maps and real time traffic, but when something comes up I open up google to see what really is going on. If there were more users, the real time traffic would be better. The map looks good, readable at all times, not as good as Sygic's. Also cloud saves your favorites and can make a preferred route and stuff. Lane guidance, but not until the last minute. \n\nId like Smarttruckroute 2's interface with Sygic's map display and Copilot's routing.\n\nCopilot costs $120 per year, if you just want their routing, pc miler is much less, a lot of companies use pc miler to figure out how much to pay you.\n\nSmarttruckroute 2 and Sygic are also around $100-$120 per year, but can be deeply discounted if on sale and if subscribed for 2 or 3 years.\n\nI will never again pay money for a standalone unit.\n\nAlso, all GPS units and apps will eventually steer you wrong. Software is only as smart as the programmer, and is also as ignorant as the programmer.","replyToPid":0}
