{"text":"So im 23 and 1 year experience and have only gotten pulled over once for a random inspection and passed it in Ohio.  Worked 6 months flat bed and now i have 6 months in dry van. Located in Michigan. \n\nShould I become an owner op and eventually my own authority. I ask because im frustrated with dispatch not knowing how to time and calculate loads. Im often stuck for 2 hours waiting for a load when they could of found it the day prior. I am patient i found out that i have to be if i want to stay in this industry.\n\nI make roughly 1500 a week and i can see myself making maybe 3x that if i get my authority because ill keep myself busy compared to what my dispatchers can.\n\nMy goal is to not only make more money but to minimize downtime. \n\nI ask this question because of this bill that might pass to increase insurance coverage to 2 million dollars. My age doesn't help with anything involving insurance. \n\nI consider myself safe never go on phone or anything. I am also in my early 20’s, squeaky clean MVR, insurance on our 1 truck (only a pickup truck at that) and 1 trailer is $4,750 a month. Getting your own authority will be more work than being a contractor in a big company that handles all the paperwork.\n\nI wouldn’t think much about the insurance part because that’s mostly only relevant to those who have their own authority. When you’re a contractor for a mega company, you’re normally using the company’s insurance as it will be cheaper. Most mega companies are probably self-insured. By the time you get ready to get your own authority, you want to have at least 30k saved up and already have a truck, preferably paid for.\n\nThe business option sounds nice, but it requires a lot of work and a lot of saving money to grow your income. This means that for several years, you really won’t be making much money because you’re investing it back into your company by paying off business debt sooner, etc."}

I never have to physically wait on a load unless it's a Monday then typically it's 15 minutes. it also help being home every weekend. I recommend being a company driver for 2 to 3 years. that way you can see the process if a truck breaks down and stuff.","replyToPid":0}

{"replyTo":"","text":"BTW, Just keep this one fact in mind: When a load is tendered to a freight broker, The broker company takes a very small overhead in like $100 ona load. The freight broker agent who works under the brokers authority gets an indistry standard of 60% to 88% of the RAW rate. Then the leftover portion is what you will see posted on boards for different lanes and markets. Freight brokers will always have 2 calculations for the load, what is offered first is the cheaper, always find reason to ask for $50 to $250 more, and make sure you are ontime everytime and NEVER NEVER cancel a load on your broker. Finish your committments no matter the cost, cut your loss, learn the lesson, and carry on.","replyToPid":0}

{"replyTo":"","text":"There is another option in our industry. You can run as a 1099 employee on percentage under an Owner/Operator who has a good relationship with a broker. No cost out of your pocket for Insurances, truck payments, maintenance, fuel, etcetera. A fare cut for experienced drivers with 1.5 million + miles is 25% of the O/O’s 88% in a spot rate market only. Times change and you will need to be flexible with your career at times to better suit your needs.
