Eventually it'll be second nature no matter what you're backing into. It took me a solid 6 months of backing in tight train yards a few times a day to get confident at it. But those trailers are steel and the paint barely scratches if you hit them. Ask me how I know, lol.

It also allows you to hear if somebody yells that you’re going to hit something or run over something or someone. It also allows you to stick your head out the window to see where your trailer is exactly tracking. Backing was the first thing I ever learned in a truck, but I realize that not everyone has the opportunity to learn it first, like I did. But, as Straight Team said above, practice in drop lots and empty lots as much as possible until you get that confidence.

It really depends on the room allotted and your tractor/trailer lengths, but with a 53ft van/reefer in a modern conventional if you stick to the left, pass the first two spaces in your tractor, then turn the wheel all the way to the right and proceed in 1st gear slowly until you’re facing the opposite direction of the spaces behind you, then turn the wheel all the way to the left and proceed until your tractor is at a perfect right angle from the row you want to back into, then stop, open window, poke head out and see if you may need to pull forward some more or if can swing perfectly in the space you want. Look at the corner of your trailer and your tandems and imagine a line from them into the space you want. And just kinda do the reverse of that, adjusting slowly as you back up. And pull up and adjust as you need to. It’s easier than it feels. Just keep practicing and YouTube or Google some tips.
