Driving on snow and ice.

Particularly mountain and downgrades.  I've had very minimal training on winter driving.  Just trying to prepare myself before winter starts. Been on my mind a lot lately. I love my job but being from the south it has definitely put a healthy fear in me. I appreciate any advice. Please saves the jokes. Everyone had to start somewhere. {"replyTo":"","text":"Take it easy, go slow until you get out of it, DO NOT USE CRUISE, use 4ways, never set your trailer brakes when parking overnight, drain your air tanks daily, carry rubbing alcohol to put in airlines, buy 10lbs of cat little in case you need traction, keep rpms as low as possible when accelerating, dont fly downhill, Crest over slowly and keep it under control, use stab braking, dont use trolly valve(if you have one), if you can't see others, they can't see you, pull off in a SAFE location, dont park on the shoulders or exit ramps, do everything slowly and deliberately and you'll do just fine.","replyToPid":0}

Stay calm especially on down grades in the snow don’t do anything jerky. Also try not to overthink it. Add Checking the weather forecast and road conditions regularly to your trip plan. Keep a small tub or bucket of salt/sand. Don’t set your trailer breaks unless dropping the trailer. Keep your windshield wiper fluid full. Keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol on you to pour into air lines. I could go on all night with tips and tricks I’ve learned either the hard way or from others mistakes. ","replyToPid":0}

{"replyTo":"","text":"f- the four way flasher thing ! jeez ! if your too scared dont run: the four way flasher thing then the cars copy the trucks thinking that truckers are the way to follow cause in the olden days THEY WHERE ; the flasher thing just blinds everyone and makes everyone slow down even more! dont drive on the snow and ice if your scared of it period ! some of the advice was pretty decent ! biggest problem isnt you! the proplem is the idiots around you ! either they are going too way slow cause they are scared ; OR. too way fast causs they are cocky! in the olden days i remember riding in a convoy theough horrible storms and everyone using team work! the overall driving atmosphere has made driving in winter way more dangerous than it needs to be! all the advancment in technoloyy and cars ruined by freaks that dont know how to use team work and everyone truck along at a pace 40-50 miles per hour is a nice decent pace to truck it through the worst storm even blinding snow; if you trust the vehicle in front of you and beside you; which i dont anymore","replyToPid":0}

If you run 80 through Wyoming they shutdown the freeway when it gets bad and if you’re in a rest/parking area you might be there a couple days before it reopens. \nKeep extra blankets and warm clothes on the truck in the event you breakdown and have no heat.\nDO NOT let dispatch drive your rig. If it’s not safe, park it. Brokers, shippers and receivers ALL make accommodations for rescheduling during winter months. If dispatch tries to pressure you into driving during a bad storm because “it’s a hot load” or “has to be on time” your reply should be “it can get there late but intact, or they can salvage it roadside from an accident.” Watch how quickly they change their tune. \nIf you’re not comfortable going at least 45mph find somewhere to park it till conditions improve.\nI’m from the south and experienced the same intense anxiety my first couple winters out here. Something that worked well for me to psych myself up to keep going until I got more comfortable driving in winter was telling myself “if it doesn’t get better in 5 miles im parking.” Usually it would ease up a bit in the 5 miles and I could keep going. Now unless it’s a skating rink or extremely heavy snowfall I just roll with it. I also watch the weather like a hawk! If I can reroute and avoid the storm, I do. Some companies don’t let you deviate from the routing, so ask dispatch if it’s possible or call them and request a different route to avoid most or all of the big storms. \nIf you start sliding DONT panic. SMALL adjustments only! \nWith roads that aren’t cleared/icy, find the rumble strip and keep the right tires on it. You’ll have traction with the rumble strip to get to the next parking area safely. \nDrop an extra gear at the top of a grade and keep jakes on low/medium (medium if you have 3-stages)\nYou might have to chain to get out of a dock if it’s icy/snow packed and this is where the kitty litter helps tremendously! Before ya back in the dock sprinkle a little bit where your drives will be sitting to get a bit more traction to get out.\nWhen you back into a spot: pull up a couple times to cool the tires and prevent the pavement from icing up from melting with hot tires.\nNEVER set trailer brakes in the winter unless you’re dropping it. \nIf brakes freeze to the drums use a flathead screwdriver and mallet to separate them.\nALWAYS watch the mirrors to confirm ALL tires are rolling when leaving your spot.\nCarry either rubbing alcohol or brake antifreeze and Diesel 911 plus use Howe’s or another antigel for fuel system.
