Tesla did have to build their own power network but Elon is a Rockstar with a fanbase. People buy the cars half for the car and half for Elon. Nikola doesn’t have that pull with fleets. The Nikola One was waaaaay to long in axle length. They shortened it with the Two and the Tre looks wicked European cabover. Nikola originally pushed the H fuel but Tesla’s numbers were to bangin considering they’re already using the Tesla Semi in network for their own stuff and Elon said they’re getting better numbers than they originally stated. I think Nikola wants to stay original with the Hydrogen fuel cells so they can look innovative but it won’t be able to compete in the long run with BEVs. Intermodal relay is something I thought about a lot myself for the driver shortage to get them home nightly or every other night but the structural integrity of the container comes from it’s waved steel and that’s not aerodynamic, defeating the new trucks fuel economy. Also the Virgin HyperLoop and its hubs would replace the need for relaying containers. 500mph+ travel time would out weight the tedious task of loading/unloading/cross docking. That would get freight cross country in 6 hrs. Unfortunately that’ll put cross country freight pilots out of business like long haulers. I doubt they’d let drivers run around town with a HyperLoop pod as an intermodal setup. If it got damaged by the driver then who knows what it would do in the tubes vacuum. Speaking of vacuum, how would they move bagged goods via the HyperLoop. Chip bags would pop. Maybe there’s hope?

631628 发表于 2019-05-01 02:43:34 I saw that Nikola ia is coming out with bevs also for the reasons you stated,  but interestingly Nikola are marketing hydrogen as the Long haul alternative , the refueling times are comparable to diesel but the infrastructure just doesn't exist so they are trying to build their own network much the way Tesla did. I wonder if fuelcells have an advantage over the cost of raw materials that are necessary for lithium ion technology though...

I think the business model will change. Instead of many trucks driving up, fueling and leaving, I think pay to park and charge will take over. Like idle air just waking up fully charged. I say that because Elon stayed the pay back time on his Semi is two years with all the cost saving. So to recoup that lost revenue the big five will probably have a full package deal. Electricity, data, tv, etc. We’ll lose parking spaces because of the slant spots but ya.

","text":"until energy density improves to that has diesel fuel I think you're right, coast to coast trucking won't exist, and I'm not sure trailers will be owned by carriers it may be more of a intermodal set up where there are relay points where charged trucks a wait and the trailer gets relayed from coast to coast"}

366847 发表于 2019-05-01 02:14:14 I doubt they will either for long haul. Probably just local like LNG. 500 mile range with Tesla Semi and 300 for local. Charge while taking a 30 in a idle air kind of set up. I think BEVs will take the lead. No venting and filling and all that.
