It’ll cost you around $40k to get started with your authority and a down payment on a used truck. Then you need 3 months of operating expenses money available-fuel, maintenance and repairs and keep in mind a crate motor is going to be $32k just for the motor so if you don’t have the cash to cover that make sure your credit is good enough to get a loan for it plus the labor costs-book time for engine replacement is 34 hours at $225/hr typical rate. Even if you use a factoring company they don’t work with all brokers so you might still end up waiting up to 90 days to get paid. This is absolutely a business and you WILL need an accountant because tax time will make you pull out your hair. Keep ALL your receipts, every single one! I typically keep mine in Manila envelopes by the month and send off COPIES to my accountant for my p/l reports. Also keep pristine records for your ratecons and PODs so IF you’re ever audited by DOT/IRS you have proof of every penny you earned and every single expense item you write off and yes we have tons we can write off. \nKeep in mind WA state just passed legislation that after 2030 NO engines are allowed- aka vehicles MUST be either CNG or electric so if you buy a used diesel truck you can’t haul in/out of the state and it’s highly likely many other states will follow suit after they see what happens to WA state when this takes full effect. Insurance costs are another massive expense for OO -I paid $78k/yr per truck & trailer combo for my first 2 years in business with zero accidents, tickets or CSA points/failed DOT inspections and I had 25 years experience in the industry before I got my authority and 4.5M safe miles under my belt. I’m not saying any of this to scare you. I’m informing you of the reality rarely seriously discussed before you open the can of worms. Yes it can be extremely rewarding, BUT it’s a business and Carrie’s serious risks. You will also have to register with a DAC consortium to be compliant with FMCSA testing regulations AND attend mandatory training.
