{"replyToPid":0,"replyTo":"","text":"It is the primary retirement income for most Americans. It is an insurance program, and for the most part, all workers are required to pay into it. \nMost people on social security paid into The SS tax their whole working life. It’s basically a government run retirement program, put into place to ensure you have money, and benefits when you can no longer work. You are not eligible for SS until you are 66.\n\nSS definitely isn’t worth it, but You have no choice, you have to pay into it. So, depending on your age, you may or may not get it. I’m 40 and looking at getting 85% of what people get now. If you’re younger you will get less and less with time. \nIf you’re young, I suggest educating yourself on finding your own investment plan. I.e. (stocks, bonds,401k). save all your extra money. Because you aren’t guaranteed a retirement, unless you build it for yourself. \n"}

{"replyToPid":0,"replyTo":"","text":"It was never intended as retirement, but to assist spouses and children if a worker was maimed or killed on the job. When it began covering the elderly at 65, the average age of death was 72 and if you had a company pension, you werent eligible. Now there's no pensions, retirement is based on Wall Street never crashing, avg lifespan is 20 years longer, and 40yrs of stagnant wage growth have crippled the ability to keep enough savings for the future. Should we still pay SS? Well, the purpose was to keep decent folks from begging in the streets. If you take away the entire social safety net, every town in America will look like Los Angeles. Only you can decide if that's what you want."}

{"replyTo":"","text":"the problem with social security is that it's going bankrupt along with welfare. the reason for this is declining birthrates. No one is having babies. at least not on the scale as big during the baby boomer generation.  Since Americans aren't having kids (thanks to feminism) barely any money is filling up the coffers. so the government or whoever's benefits under Social Security turns to immigration, this will change the demographics in America and guess where we getting our new folks from. you see them everywhere now.","replyToPid":0}

{"replyTo":"","text":"I think they should rename it \"assistance\". When people begin taking it, like at 67, a person who made $48k or more for the last 10 years MAY get $2000/month. Then, assuming you take Medicare, that is (in 2020) around $145/month (but the medical benefits supercede most Group Insurance plans). Then taxes are taken out, because SS is a pre-tax withdrawal.\n\nI would know, I am also a Florida Health Insurance Agent, also licensed in North Carolina, and certified to offer Medicare Advantage plans.","replyToPid":0}
