How does one become a Trucker?

{"text":"One of our driver have shared his experience with us on how to start in the Trucking  industry.\n\nYou have a few choices.\n\n1. Go to a truck driving school. It can be a school that does nothing but teach to pass the written exam and skills test or a community college. Most companies require drivers with less than 1 or 2 years to have graduated a driving school / academy. The community college route is good if you have a job and aren't 100% sure you want to drive for a living.\n\n2. Get hired by a company that has their own driving school. Once you pass they will put you with a trainer or driver mentor for several weeks.\n\n3. Get hired by a company that will sponsor you at a driving school. Once graduated they will put you on the road with one of their trainers. Although I had my CDL as a mechanic I still had to go through a school to become a driver. This was the option I used.\n\nNumbers 2 & 3 almost always require a contract where you commit to staying with the company for a year or two. In exchange they pay for your training and in some cases pay you while you're at school.\n\n4. Hire onto a company that will train you on the job. You may have another job while being trained. They'll teach you the skills to pass the driving test and have someone ride with you for several weeks to make sure you learn the job. One of my sons friends took a job with the state on a road repair crew as a sign handler. A driving position opened on the crew and they agreed to train him. I know a couple people who went to work for UPS on the docks and were trained to be drivers by UPS. I also know a couple who used to be loaders for McLane Co. who McLane sponsored through the local community college then trained them on the road.\n\nIn every career path you make, it is best to make sure that you are happy and you want to do those things that are expected from you.
