{"replyToPid":0,"replyTo":"","text":"Makes no sense to me why owner operators would take loads more than 700 miles from where they are based being that eld that is about max you can get in a day...as an owner op you should be having way more home time than company driver otherwise your kinda failing goal is make more work less enjoy life, you can’t do that driving cross country every week chasing rates and loads away from home months at a time if you can’t get rates out of your area to cover costs and make decent profits then no point being owner op better off buying truck and hiring a driver to run cross country chasing rates for you while you focus on more profitable investments in your area"}

{"replyTo":"","text":"I'm going to throw my 2 cents in here. first of all the fuel mileage on a day cab is not any better and can actually be worse if it doesn't have any fairings to close the gap behind the cab. then there is the cost of that hotel and cab ride, you might be able to right off some of that but not all and your not going to  get enough rest if you just take the 10hrs off to do that (the ride to and from the hotel). Then you don't have any room for storage of anything like winter gear. Then you get to one of those shippers or receivers and they hold you at the dock for 8 hrs or more because they had a break down in the plant and can't finish your load and won't let you leave or drop your trailer to go to hotel because they have you half loaded. The list goes on and on. Besides the point someone else made about being shut down sue to hwy closure. Day cab's have there place for local work and some short regional work like you mentioned and about the short runs of 600 to 700 mile round trip back to your starting point. I saw you mentioned you have done this for about a year. Not to poke the inexperienced button but you have been obviously in a pretty much protected situation and haven't had to deal with some or any of the possible events that you would need that sleeper to get some rest or to even just stay alive by crawling into the bunk and wrap up in the blankets to stay warm in the dead of winter if your truck breaks down while waiting for help. All I'm saying is you have to think about all of the thing that could possibly happen at any time. The ELD really has nothing to do with how far you can drive. The HOS is the determining thing with that. The ELD is just a tool that keeps track of your HOS.","replyToPid":0}

{"replyTo":"","text":"looks like a lot of owner operators beat me to the answer here. lol Hotels are very expensive and not all of them allows a driver to park the truck and trailer. I did run a day cab OTR for a short time just to deliver it and even though I got reimbursed for the hotels, it was a real pain trying to find a hotel that was easy for me to get to. It was real difficult if I was off the main roads or away from cities or big towns. You also have to consider the fact you eat out more often (don't have a lot of room to carry all of your clothes, personal hygiene products, and food), and if your truck isn't at the hotel you need to bring things back and forth which also eats up your 10 hr break. So, you don't really get to relax too much during your break. Trust me, the cons outweigh the pros.","replyToPid":0}
