{"text":"A truck driver needs to be very patient to survive in the industry. Patience on the road is important but patience and understanding, even a ‘Zen’ approach is advantageous because you as the driver rarely sees the ‘bigger picture’. Logistics is both complex and simple and a truck driver is a very important part. However, drivers can get very frustrated by delays, mistakes or changes of plan by the people who’s jobs it is to know and operate the bigger picture. My only advice to new drivers is you need to get used to getting messed about and delayed often especially when it’s not your fault. Do everyone a favour, calm down and relax until there is something useful you can do, so just be polite and sit tight. If you are rude to dispatchers and administration staff, remember they have the power to ruin your day, week or year if you are impatient with them. I’ve always found that it pays dividends to be patient, polite and helpful even if they are stressed and rude.\n\nUnfortunately, work as a professional driver is perceived by the general public as being a dead-end, zero status job for dropouts, idiots and ex-cons. The truth is that the job takes a lot of time and commitment to even be qualified to do.\n\nI know this because I have worked in the road transport industry as a driver at different periods throughout my adult life and occasionally still climb up and get behind the wheel, not because I have to but because I actually enjoy driving large heavy vehicles!\n\nIf you want to do it then there is nothing stopping you and the barriers to entry are low. Trucking companies are desperate for drivers due to the high employee turn over rate and low pay relative to the time you spend at work. The pay is actually good compared to other unskilled jobs, it's just that you don't get time to enjoy it as a full time driver.\n\nTrucks have become easier to drive due to most having automatic transmissions, the old Eaton-Fuller Roadranger non-synchro gearboxes are an anachronism and really only for driving enthusiasts now. I love using them because they are a satisfying challenge to learn to use and operate daily but given the choice I'd go for an automatic box every time now if I was covering a couple of thousand miles every week. Manually changing between 13 to 18 gear ratios, hundreds of times a day contributes to fatigue so once I got used to automatic shifting I never looked back. The automatics are more fuel efficient too which is why the companies spec new trucks with them.\n\nThe technology in new trucks can drive them better than most drivers can so older drivers mostly hate them because the tech makes their driving seem jerky and full of bad habits, which it is. Drivers need training to adjust to the tech and to the most fuel efficient way of driving. A difficult task for drivers used to driving exactly how they liked for many years...","videos":"[]","link":"{}","pics":"[]","canComment":true}
