{"text":"For General Info.......\n\nLast week I was on my way back from Laredo with an empty trailer. I'd just nicely got into Louisiana on I-10 when I got into a \"construction zone\" where the open lane put me running up the shoulder. Suddenly the truck started making these loud grinding/rattling noises when under throttle. Sounded metal to metal like. Pulled over in the rain and did a quick check (while trying to avoid being run down by passing traffic). Nothing visibly hitting anything else. Made it up the road to a Love's and parked for the rest of the night. On inspection by daylight I discover the control rod for the air-ride hanging loose and the air bags flat. \"Aha\", I says, \"there's the problem. Flat air bags changes the drive-line angle and stuff binds up\". On closer inspection I discover that the stock McVolvo control rod is equipped with plastic tips..... one of which had snapped in half.\n\nNo mechanic on duty at the Loves, so I \"jury rigged\" a fix using a liberal amount of duct tape to fasten the broken end together. Air bags inflate and I make the 3 hour trip back to the terminal without the noises. Shop replaces the busted control rod with a sturdier metal with rubber bushings one. Next day I load out for Livonia MI and everything's cool. Stop up by Kentucky Speedway on I-71 for my DOT break and start on. * Graunch, crunch, snap\" just like the previous episode. Control rod is fine, air bags appear good. \"Crap\", I thinks, \" something got damaged by the last time and is now letting go\". Now I'm thinking trans bearing, etc.\n\nWind up getting towed to Mack/Volvo dealer in Cincinnatti. \"Levelling control valve\", they tell me, \"we get that a lot. They sieze up and that's probly what broke the control rod.\" :stare1: Anyways, after replacing the valve (it took them 2 days to get one from Dayton) I've had no repeat of the problem...... so far.\n\nMoral...... if you run across this problem, replace the whole unit.","pics":"[]","canComment":true}
