My solution for the truck parking shortage.

{"text":"In the United state there are only 308,000 truck parking spaces to the 3.5 million truck drivers. This creates a massive problem in the industry causing the average driver to loss $4,600 a year in wages due to the loss of miles from having to shut down early, the cost of reserved parking they are forced to get at times, parking tickets and tow bills from being forced to park illegally when spaces run out. This is according to studies done by the American Transportation Research Institute, and the shortage is only getting worst with every day. \n\nNow before I share my solution let’s talk about the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act. This bill would of provided funding from the DOTs current budget to provide a little over 700 million dollars over 5 years to a competitive grant program to construct new truck parking. This bill died the same year without a vote. Here is a link to that bill. https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/6104/text?r=65&s=1\n\nThe solution that I’m working on to write to my states representatives is this.\n\nDoubling the number are truck parking to 600,000 spaces over the next 9 years with a yearly goal of 35,000 new spaces. Data from companies like Trucker Path can be used to target areas that have parking full most often. Also, a mandate to require street parking for 18-Wheelers in future developments of industrial zones should be enacted. Tax incentives should be put in place to encourage shippers and consignees to provide parking for deliveries and pickups. \n\nThe cost of a concrete parking space for trucks is $7 per square foot at the high end. A 15x75 parking space will cost $7,875. To build 300,000 spaces it will require 2.4 billion dollars. Over 9 years this is 262 million a year.  To pay for this I’m suggesting a 9 year tax of only $46 on carriers per driver they employ each year, which is one percent of a loss compared to the $4600 the American Transportation Research Institute studies say we’re losing a year due to this problem. In addition to that tax $29 per trucker each year is to be used from the DOTs current budget. Together this is the 262 million needed each year to complete this project and make this shortage a thing of the past. \n\nAfter the nine years are up the tax can be reduced or eliminated based on the growth of the number of truckers and the cost of maintenance on the new parking facilities. \n","videos":"[]","link":"{}","pics":"[]","canComment":true,"externalShare":false}

{"replyTo":"","text":"Your logic is backwards. Why would I pay a “per driver” tax when it’s the truck that needs a parking space not the driver. I’m at the bottom of the totem pole in the money flow. Shipper-Broker-Carrier. Your proposed tax is coming from the wrong end!","replyToPid":0}

{"replyTo":"","text":"One way to do it cheaply is to build more truck parking outlets with no facilities! Basically just pave a long ramp off the interstate or highway! Put in a few lights, a few dumpsters, and you’re good to go when low on hours and you have to make that delivery! It doesn’t always have to be a truck stop or rest area! Just somewhere to park!","replyToPid":0}

I’ve never heard someone say this won’t solve the problem, just people pointing the finger as to why someone else should pay. This is the sacrifice that must be made if we want to see change. "}

","text":"Good point, a quote from Ronald Regan is that “A new government agency is about the closest thing to eternal life on this Earth that we’ll see.” Meaning once they have control of something they don’t let go. I’ve seen studies that also say once toll booths are build and gain enough money to pay off the road or bridge they were created for they never go away or reduce they’re fee. So, I’ll kind that in mind as I revise my letter to my congress member. "}
